At the margins of the old city center in Palermo many of these walled up closures in the facades of old houses can be found. In these for a long time disadvantaged areas, now even more suffering from the economic crisis, many premises are vacant because former residents emigrated to the mainland or countries in the north. Now, there is simply no more demand, or the owners are lacking economic resources for a refurbishment to attract new tenants or buyers. For the owners it is the cheapest and most effective way to conserve and protect their property from an intrusion of animals, homeless and squatters.
